ALL SPELLINGS OF PAINE IN CENSUS FOR NY & PA |
The following lists were copied from indexes of census returns for the years 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840. It must be remembered that each time information is copied there is a new chance for errors to be made. Some mistakes were likely made in making the original indexes and I being human most likely made a few more when I copied them. If you find any mistakes could you please let me know.
I had found some names and places where the spelling may have been a mistake on the index so gave it the spelling that I believe it should have been but also gave the spelling that it was in the index. For example I found the name "Jaems" so have entered it as "James (sp Jaems)" . This way if some was looking for James it will show up.
I have amalgamated the different years all into one list and a few interesting things show up like one year a lot of Paines were spelt Pain then the next year they will be spelt Payne.
Some names have a * or ** after them this was on the index and I can only guess that this was to indicate a hard to read name.
In other information there are some numbers such as 01-01-02-00-00 or 10100-10110 etc. These number correspond to the columns in the census of that year.
As a last note remember that this is just a list and to check the actual documents.
