VOGEL, GEORGE - My GGGGG grandfather was a Hessian soldier named Georg Vogel. He and his
brother Hans Heinrich Vogel were taken into the army from the town of
Michelsburg, Germany at the age of 17 and 19. Hans was captured at Trenton
and died in the New Goal Philadelphia Prison of non-battle related causes
in Oct. 1779. George was captured at Brandywine and I believe taken to
Easton, PA POW camp.
We have no proof of this but 9 months after Brandywine
he enlisted in the Northampton Co. Militia as a pvt. Records show he came
from Mt Bethel Twp. It was common for the Hessian enlisted men to be put on
farms in areas adjacent to the camps. Mt. Bethel Twp. is very close to
Easton.Georg's story to his sons and grandsons was that he deserted at
Brandywine and immediately joined the American Army. He said he was put to
work driving a wagon and after the battle of Brandywine found his dead
brothers body on the battlefield. There must have been great shame in being
captured as his story is an obvious fabrication.
He married Deborah Thomas
in 1788 and lived in PA until 1818 when he was 61 years old. He and his
family moved to Muskinghum Co. Ohio, Blue Rock Twp. and there he lived
until his death in 1840. Would like to hear from anyone who might have
information on him.

VOGES, HEINRICH - My husband's ancestor md. as her 2nd husband, Heinrich Voges (later
Anglicized to FOGUS). He was from Brunswick, not Hesse, according to
the book by Clifford Neal Smith as seen in the Lancaster Co., PA
Historical Society Library. There were two men of this name and one given as Joh. Heinr. Voges
listed in Mr. Smith's book, but I think that I've narrowed it down to
the one from Langelsheim who "deserted in Virginia".
Heinrich was probably captured either at the Battle of Bennington or
the Battle of Saratoga---more probably the latter. If the latter, those
prisoners were taken to Boston and then sent down to either Frederick or
Albemarle Co., Virginia. Charlottesville in Albemarle Co. was where
Heinrich (Henry) was taken. He then deserted and evidently was hired
out in Augusta Co., VA where he met and married Elizabeth, dau. of Henry
HAWK (also of German ancestry), as her 2nd and last husband. She was
the widow of Jacob GRASS, Jr. who had died in Augusta Co. ca. 1785.
They were md. there in Oct of 1785.

VON BARDELEBEN - Seeking all those interested in
descendants of Lt. Arthur Franz Ferdinand von Bardeleben (of the
von Ditfurth Reg't) or Capt. Johann Heinrich von Bardeleben
(of the von Donop Reg't).
Arthur remained in Charleston after the war and descendants are of
the names DEBARDELEBEN or DEBARDELABEN.

VON KUNTZ, NICHOLAS - He received land in Grainger
Co, TN. I don't know if he was a desserter or if he was actually
born in the USA. Other descendants have other stories. I just want
to keep an open mind about how he got here. My branch says he came
here from Germany to fight in the Revolution. Another source said
there was a private who desserted in PA by the same name, nothing
concrete as yet.
