Benny Green, 27 at the time of this CD, is a modern jazz classicist who has absorbed the music of many bop-oriented pianists into his own style. Hearing him play Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere" makes it easy to believe that Green is a graduate of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Whether it be a rendition of "See See Rider" (very much in Red Garland's chordal style), the classic bop of Elmo Hope's "Crazy," a tender "I'll Wait and Pray" (one of three unaccompanied solos) or a lazy "Lil' Darlin'," Green plays quite creatively while remaining within the hard bop tradition. With the assistance of bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Victor Lewis, Green's octave runs and general good taste are impressive if not innovative. This CD, which also inculdes tunes by Monk and Bud Powell, is a good example of his talents.
